AM

Work began by cleaning up and sorting a little loose dirt remaining from yesterday's pick pass of the SW quarter of the trench.  Soil is dark gray, full of carbon, and sorted directly in the trench.

Once this dirt was removed, a pick pass was made of the NE quarter of the trench.  Soil for the most part remains clay-like with lots of carbon chunks and is dark gray, although in app. the easternmost meters of the trench, there are some medium-sized rocks and the soil appears to be more of a dark olive brown and contains slightly less carbon chunks.  Soil is sorted directly in the trench.  While sorting, the amount of pottery and bone recovered seems to be slightly less, and near the bottom of the pick pass, the soil seems to be becoming an olive green colored soil, especially along the northern baulk.

Although the amount of material recovered from this pick pass seems to be less than in the previous pick passes of Locus 13 , there is still a high quantity of pottery and bone that has been recovered from this pick pass, but only a small amount of tile and plaster has been found.  During this pick pass, a sherd of painted pottery (Find #1) and a possible rocchetto fragment (Find #2) were recovered.

Once the pick pass of the NE quarter was sorted and cleared, a small pick pass was made in the SE quarter of the trench.  Here, no signs of the olive-green soil that had been revealed along the northern baulk are visible after the pick pass; the soil remains claylike and dark gray, with many small to medium sized carbon chunks intermixed in the soil.  Soil is sorted in the trench, directly into buckets.  App. the same amount of pottery and bone (high quantities) and tile and plaster (low quantities) were recovered from the SE quarter as were found in the NE quarter.  During htis pick pass, a large piece of antler (Find #3) was recovered.  Additionally, when sorting through the pottery, a painted creamware handle sherd (Find #4) was found.

PM

The remainder of the soil from this morning's pick pass was sorted and cleared.  Soil remains dark gray, claylike, carbon-rich, and contains a high quantity of pottery and bone and a small amount of tile and plaster, although the amount of pottery and bone recovered today is less than the amount excavated yesterday.

Once this pick pass was cleaned up, it was decided to pick a small area lying between the two areas picked this morning.  The soil continiues to be claylike, dark gray, and carbon rich and contains a good amount of pottery and bone but little

tile and plaster.  Soil is sorted in the trench directly into buckets.  During this pick pass, a piece of cut bone (Find #5) was found.
