Description	Locus 13 was comprised of a claylike, dark gray, extremely carbon rich, burnt soil. The soil itself was dark gray in color and it also contained many chunks of carbon, ranging in size from inclusions to fist-sized pieces. This soil was thickest in the NW corner of the trench, where it was approximately 30cm thick, and shallowist in the SE corner of the trench, where it was only approximately 13cm thick. This soil package sloped downward from NE to SW. Notably, Locus 13 contained a great deal of pottery and bone, but virtually no tile; 5451 sherds of pottery and --- pieces of bone were recovered from this stratum, while only --- bowls of terracotta and plaster were found. Due to the proximity of the trench to the Orientalizing workshop, it seems likely that this soil is to be associated with the destruction of the workshop; the distinctive amount of carbon in the soil, as well as the amount of ceramic and bone debris found, indicate that this stratum represents the burning and subsequent destruction of the Workshop, and the entire Orientalizing complex. The lack of tile and plaster may be explained by the apparent levelling effort of the site, which is represented by Loci 11 and 12, which overlie this carbon-rich soil.
