Work began with a pick pass of the western half of Locus 13 .  The soil remains claylike and extremely carbon rich, which gives the soil a dark gray color; the size of the carbon chunks range from the size of inclusions to fist-sized chunks.  At the bottom of the pick pass, more olive-green soil, like the soil found along the northern baulk on July 18 ( see p. 131 ) was found.  It seems clear that this olive-green soil represents a definite soil change, underlying the dark gray, heavily carbonized soil of Locus 13 .

The soil of Locus 13 continues to yield very little tile and plaster but extremely high quantities of pottery and bone.  During this pick pass, a sherd of painted pottery (Find #1), an incised bone (Find #2), a second piece of incised bone (Find #3), a fenestrated vessel fragment in the pottery box (Find #4), 3 pieces of vitrified terracotta (Finds #5, 6, 7), and an additional piece of vitrified terracotta (Find #8) were found.

Another pick pass was made, this time of the middle of the trench.  The soil continues to be carbon rich, dark gray, and claylike, although the concentration of pottery and bone seems to be slightly less than the previous pick pass.  Soil continues to be sorted in the trench, directly into buckets.  During this pick pass, a stamped handle sherd (Find #9), a rocchetto fragment (Find #10), 2 sherds of painted pottery

(Finds #11, 12), and an iron hook (Find #13) were recovered.

A third pick pass was made in the easternmost meters of the trench.  Immediately upon picking the NE quarter of the trench, galestra began to appear, although in the SE quarter the soil is still dark gray and claylike, consistent with the soil of Locus 13 .  Additionally, in the NE quarter, where the galestra has appeared, the soil seems to be virtually sterile, while in the SE where the dark gray soil is still present, the amount of materials recovered is notably less than the previous pick passes of Locus 13 .  Soil continues to be sorted directly in the trench into buckets.

Work began with a pick pass of the westernmost meters of the trench. The soil continued to be dark gray, carbon-rich, and claylike, although at the bottom of the pick pass, the soil definitely seems to be becoming olive green. Additionally, the dark gray soil of this pick pass contains an extremely high quantity of pottery and bone but virtually no tile or plaster; the western half of the trench has yielded more material than the eastern half. During this pick pass, an Italo-Corinthian vessel (Find #14), a ridged bucchero handle (Find #15), a piece of cut bone (Find #16), a bronze tack (Find #17), an iron or bronze rod (Find #18), a bronze fibula pin (Find #!9), a sherd of painted pottery (Find #20), the stem of an Italo-Corinthian vessel (Find #21), a sherd of impasto with a finial (Find #22),

A stamped bucchero stem (Find #23), and a possible carbonized olive pit (Find #24) were all recovered from this pick pass. Another pick pass was completed, of the middle of the trench and the SW quarter. The soil continued to be the same dark gray soil and galestra continued to be exposed underneath. A great amount of pottery and bone was recovered while hardly any tile and plaster was found. During this pick pass, a spindle whorl (Find #25), a forno fragment (Find #26), an incised bucchero sherd (Find #27), and a sherd of ribbed bucchero (Find #29) were found, while a piece of misfired pottery with air pockets was found in the pottery box (Find #28).
