Work began by picking the remaining mottled soil of both Loci 11 and 12 ; this soil is clay-like and dark brown, contains numerous terracotta, carbon, and limestone inclusions (the terracotta lends a reddish tinge to the soil), and exists in the SW corner of the trench ( Locus 12 ) and along the southern baulk. Additionally, baulk walls will be trimmed in preparation for the closing of Loci 11 and 12 (mottled soil) and the opening of Locus 13 throughout the entire trench (carbon rich, dark gray, burnt soil).
The carbon-rich, dark gray soil slopes down out of the NW corner to the SE, fairly dramatically at first and then levels out toward the middle of the trench. Soil is sorted
directly in the trench, into buckets. While soil was cleared and baulk walls were trimmed, a piece of bronze was found in Locus 11 and another piece in the baulk wall, and so it was decided to establish bulk bronze boxes. In both Loci 11 and 12 , a fair amount of tile and ceramic was recovered, as well as a relatively high concentration of bone and large chunks of carbon. While trimming the southern baulk wall, some fragments of vitrified terracotta (Find #1) were found from what would be Locus 11 .

Baulk walls continued to be trimmed in preparation for the closing of Loci 11 and 12 and opening of Locus 13 ; all remaining mottled soil was removed in the morning. While trimming baulk walls, a slingstone fragment (Find \xe02) was recovered from what would have been Locus 11 . This looks like it may join to the slingstone fragment found yesterday ( 9/7/08, Find #1, p. 87 ).
Once the baulk walls were adequately trimmed, closing photos and elevations for Loci 11 and 12 /Opening photos and elevations for Locus 13 were taken and Locus 13 was declared open throughout the entire trench.

Locus 13 is comprised of a dark gray, extremely carbon-rich, probably burnt soil. The surface of the soil is highest in the NW corner of the trench and slopes down to the SE.
Opening elevations: Locus 13
- NW corner (52S/194E): 26.28m A.E.
- NE corner (52S/198E): 25.93m A.E.
- SE corner (54.90S/198E): 25.76m A.E.
- SW corner (55S/194E): 25.87m A.E.
There were artifacts clearly visible in the floor of Locus 13 , and so it was decided to trowel. While troweling, the stem and tondo of a cup (Find #3), a slingstone fragment (Find #4), a fenestrated vessel sherd (Find #5), a ribbed impasto sherd (Find #6), a handle sherd (Find #9), and an iron hook (Find #7) were recovered, as well as a painted pottery sherd (Find #8). The soil is claylike, dark gray, and extremely carbon rich, containing many carbon inclusions, and contains an extremely high quantity of ceramics and bone, but relatively little tile and plaster. Additionally, a piece of worked bone (Find #10) and a possible piece of antler or tusk (Find #11) were recovered.
