Description | Locus 11 consisted of a clay-like, brown, mottled soil matrix with many inclusions of carbon and terracotta; the heavy mottling, especially the terracotta inclusions, gave this soil a reddish color when viewed from afar. This soil contained a fair amount of materials. Tile and plaster concentrations were especially high in the southern portion of the trench and numerous large pottery sherds, mainly pithoi sherds, were recovered from these southern meters as well. Additionally, many large chunks of carbon (5-7cm and bigger) were found as well. Furthermore, a large quantity of bone was found throughout the locus, as was a fairly high quantity of very fine bucchero. This soil package was fairly thick, reaching depths in the SE corner of the locus of approximately 50cm. The surface of this locus was fairly level, however this mottled soil extended much deeper in the SE corner of the locus. It seems likely that this stratum is Orientalizing in date, post-dating the destruction of the Orientalizing complex, and seems to be a leveling effort on the part of the residents of Poggio Civitate, in order to make the topography of the hill more regular for the construction of the later archaic building. This would explain why the surface of this locus is level, but it is much deeper in the SE corner than in the NW corner of the locus. This locus is to be associated with and conflated with Locus 10 (2007 excavation season) and Locus 12. |
