Trench | T90_2022 |
Year | 2022 |
Description |
Locus 34 consisted of a heavily compacted and plaster-rich soil. The locus was situated in the southern and eastern meters of the trench, just to the east of a preserved portion of EPOC4’s floor that was exposed in 2019 and excavated in 2022 as Locus 37. The upper surface of Locus 34 also was at the same elevation as the preserved portion of EPOC4’s plaster rich floor and was an eastward continuation of the same deposit. Therefore, Locus 34 is a portion of EPOC4’s plaster-rich, earthen floor. The vast majority of material culture recovered from Locus 34 consisted of floor plaster, although we also recovered small quantities of pottery, bone, and slag. We removed this preserved portion of EPOC4’s floor in its entirety and collected all of this deposit as a sample for flotation; the deposit was only lightly sorted, in order to remove material culture that would be damaged by flotation, such as pottery. In addition, the upper surface of Locus 34 preserved a large, rectangular charcoal concentration that appears to have been the preserved remains of a burnt beam or branch; this charcoal concentration also was collected as a sample for flotation, and a segment was collected as a charcoal sample. For documentation purposes, Locus 34 also was designated Special Find #63. Locus 34 is equivalent to Loci 8, 12, 14, 20, and 37. Locus 34 underlay Locus 33 and overlay Locus 35. |
