Year | 2022 |
Description |
Locus 37 was situated in the southern meters of the trench, just to the north of EPOC4’s southern foundation wall, and underlaid Locus 24, which was excavated in 2019. It also was positioned directly to the west of Locus 34. It measured approximately 1.5 meters in width and 2 meters in length. Locus 37 was a heavily compacted deposit that was rich in plaster. The plaster was interspersed among a claylike, mottled soil with inclusions of terracotta, plaster, and charcoal. Numerous small stones (maximum dimension 10cm) were compressed into the surface of Locus 37, forming a concentration or cobbling of stones. Most material culture recovered from Locus 37 consisted of plaster fragments; we only recovered moderate quantities of pottery, bone, slag, and vitrified terracotta, although ceramic finds included slipped pottery (20220090) and bone finds included antler (20220092). Locus 37 was a preserved portion of EPOC4’s plaster-rich, beaten-earth floor, that we removed to expose the underlying dark-gray, charcoal-rich deposit of Locus 39. As a portion of EPOC4’s floor, it is equivalent to Loci 8, 12, 14, 20, and 34; it also was contiguous with Locus 34. Locus 37 underlaid Locus 24 and overlaid Locus 39. |
