Description

Locus 36 was situated in the easternmost meters of T90. It was excavated using handpicks and trowels. Locus 36 consisted of a relatively loose soil deposit that was mottled in color, with plaster and charcoal inclusions. Interspersed among the soil was a dense concentration of small stones (maximum dimension 20cm), terracotta tiles, and coarseware ceramics.

Stratigraphically, Locus 36 underlay Locus 33 and overlay Locus 38. It was at the same elevation as Locus 22, which was excavated in 2018, and was visibly situated stratigraphically below EPOC4’s plaster rich floor (Locus 20). Locus 36 is equivalent to Locus 9 and Locus 22. Therefore, Locus 36 has been identified as EPOC4’s subfloor and is associated with the earliest phase of construction of EPOC4.

Although Locus 36 has been securely identified as a portion of EPOC4’s subfloor, it was not a secure deposit; large stones, likely associated with Locus 32 and with the small rectilinear hut that was built atop EPOC4’s front porch, following its abandonment, intruded into this deposit, causing some contamination.

Locus 36 contained an abundance of material culture, including high quantities of terracotta tile, coarseware ceramics, and materials associated with metallurgy, including slag, crucible fragments, and tiles and ceramics with adhered slag. We also observed high quantities of charcoal in the deposit and collected one charcoal sample from this locus (Charcoal Sample #5). The finds recovered from Locus 36 all appear to date to the first half of the 7th century, although some finds, such as 20220038, a fluted bucchero carination, likely date to the middle of the 7th century; however, this ceramic sherd was found next to one of the intrusive large stones.
