General remarks | This is a new area which for now we are excavating as a wall. We came across these two parallel lines which ran through the center of the trench, starting at the W baulk and going towards the E baulk, pretty much perpendicular. Unclear as to whether or not it is a wall, although for now this is how we are excavating it. As we ended this locus we were still unsure as to whether or not this was a wall locus or merely part of a larger pavement and we were able to pick up these lines easier. Uncertainty regarding walls reigns supreme this year. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
