General remarks | This is a surface, and a pretty nice one at that. Seems to be a surface contemporary with the cobble pathway 1086. There may also be a wall (1096) which we think may keep the surface inside or outside. As we came right down upon the surface in the locus above it (1083) we were able to find three nice examples of blades, one obsidian and two chert. These were finds in L1083, although they were probably laying right upon this surface or just above it. In the middle of the trench, but in the far S part of this locus we have a jar coming up which we think may be a complete large storage jar which was buried in the surface 1089. That would be awesome to see this jar. Jar actually appears to be related to this surface, or the even better surface just below it L1098. It must be said that this surface locus is nowhere near as good or cool as the surface which it capped, L1098. Look to there for the cool surface stuff of this context. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
