Phase Description
Description Locus 21 defines a section of the collapse elements found in series while excavating the west area of Locus 9, between the 19th and 24th arch springers toward the north. In this locus were four partially seriated rows of arch slabs lying with their north south ends still resting on top of their associated arches [see sketches of 14/VII/04 and 17/VII/04]. At the time these elements collapsed the underlying deposit of fill and architectural fragments sloped from north to south and west to east. This allowed the south and east portions of the seriated collapse to settle up to 0.60 m lower than the north and west portions. The appearance of this assemblage was the first direct evidence derived from Trench 97, which elucidates the characteristics and usage of the arch slabs for the West Cryptoporticus East. It is notable that the construction technique was completely different from that used in the vault discovered by Martha Sharp Joukowsky in Trench 100 at the north end of the East Cryptoporticus West. The surrounding fill was identical to that of Locus 9.
