Description | Fill/Debris within the Theater, above the level of the Pulpitum Wall Locus 14 at the north and the Orchestra Retaining Wall Locus 12 at the south and up to the level of the lowest tier of seating in the Cuneous Locus 7. This locus consists of large stone architectural debris with sandy fill - equal to Locus 13 below it. The vast majority of architectural fragments found in this locus belong to columns and their capitals which fell from the West Colonnade. Several fragments of decorative plaster were found white fluted plaster from the columns and green painted wall plaster from the Theater itself (see Locus 13 above). Some indication of the architectural decoration in this area of the Temple was indicated by the discovery of two carved stone bosses in the form of a single pine cone surrounded by a leaf halo. They are identical to the pine cone bosses from the capitals except that they attached from the back instead of from the base and so were probably used as wall decoration. Unfortunately, their context (i.e., mixed in the collapse rubble) does not inform us about their original placement in the room. The possibility of a carved relief decorating the area of the Pulpitum, is suggested by a fragment of a pedestal in relief found in the debris directly above the central area of the Pulpitum Wall Locus 14. (Seq. 47122). |
