Description The West Central Cuneous in the Cavea flanked by the Central Scalarium Locus 11 at the east and the West Scalarium Locus 8 at the northwest. The bottom tier of this Cuneous is a section of the walkway that extends across the front of the Cavea. This walkway is paved with truncated wedge-shaped pavers alternating in purple and white sandstone and supported by a rubble fill behind the Orchestra Retaining Wall Locus 12. Above this are three tiers of stone seating—there were originally additional tiers extending above the West 'Adyton' (see Trench 22) which backs on this Cuneous but they apparently collapsed into the West 'Adyton' at the time of the Temple's destruction (channeled stones like those included in the seating were discovered while excavating the fill/debris in the West 'Adyton'). The two middle tiers have channels cut into the top and face of the seats — three in the second tier and one in the third. The second and third tiers measure 0.40 m in height. The second tier is 1.10 m deep and paved with white sandstone pavers covering the rear half. The excessive depth of this tier in comparison to the other tiers extant in the Cavea, and the existence of the pavers indicates an additional function of this tier besides seating. Perhaps the extra depth simply allowed for easy passage across the tier even when seated at full capacity. The third tier measures 0.50 m deep. Only two stones from the fourth tier are extant, one at each end of the tier. The West Central Cuneous is backed by the north wall of the West 'Adyton' (Locus 14 of Trench 22). (Seq. 47162).
