Definition Soil below the south ‘bench’ (Locus 50) of the ‘covered pool’
Description Locus 53 is the soil below the south ‘bench’ (Locus 49) above the floor of the ‘covered pool.’ It is a very thin layer of soil, only a few centimeters in height, with small amounts of pottery, glass, and opus sectile, and thankfully one coin that should be dateable. The soil was a fin compacted silt/sand with a Munsell of 7.5 YR 3/3 (dark brown). This soil is probably the result of natural sedimentation, after the pool was covered and went out of use, before the ‘benches’ were put in. It is phased with the ‘bench’ that covers it, Locus 50, to Stage 5.
