Description Locus 5 Locus 5 lies below Locus 2. It abuts Locus 6 to the north and the southern section wall to the south. It is largely triangular in shape, being 10cm wide in the S.E. corner extending to over 1m wide into the western section wall. It is related to Locus 13 in VT13 and Locus X in VT12. Locus 5 consists of a densely compacted clay-like soil. It is very dark brown in colour. It has many small stones as inclusions, but significantly it contains an abundance of ancient materials, including roofing tile, pottery, bone, and many distinctive and chronologically significant artefacts – pointing to a date of deposition sometime around the end of the 4th century BC. Locus 5 appears to be a fill deposited in the ditch in which the linear stone feature was constructed. The fill is generally related to all other ancient fills from 2015 and 2016 in so far as we can determine, comprising near identical materials. Within Locus 5 a large carbon deposit contiguous with Locus 6 in VT12 was recovered. This has been designated as a feature within the locus and described as Locus 8. In total 466 sherds were excavated and 63% of these were impasto and another 24% were caorseware, while the remaining ceramics were finewares.
