Daily Log 11/7/16

11/7/16

AM

The morning began with a light pick pass in the southwestern corner of locus 7 to try and expose any possibly new soils, we are now 5cm below the surface of the stones. It was decided to close locus 7 and open new loci. The southern and eastern baulks were trimmed and the bottom of locus 7 was flattened. 3 loci will be opened. The northeastern corner will be locus 8 , here the soil is a yellow-brown and very few artifacts were recovered from this area. Locus 9 will be the not-dense packing of stones running from the north west to the southeast in the extension. No clear formation is taking shape, there are present a few pieces of terracotta on the surface, Locus 10 will be the southwestern corner where the darker olive-brown soil where artifacts are still present, this locus is similar in composition to locus 7 .

A pick pass was completed in locus 8 . The soil was initially sorted by hand into buckets but it is so devoid of artifacts that we switched to shoveling and sorting over the wheelbarrow. The soil becomes a brighter yellow as it is being picked. A few pieces of terracotta were recovered but this locus is yielding very little artifactual material. What there is is concentrated north of the stump in the northern section of locus 8 . A second pick pass was done in the locus. Soil continues to be a yellow brown included with fragments of limestone and quartz.

Soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted at the wheelbarrow. A piece of bone and some fragments of pottery were found, but only in the northern section of the locus. The southern part is becoming more rocky and 10-15 cm sized rocks were loosen and removed. A third pick pass was done in the locus. Soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted at the wheelbarrow. Fragments of pottery and a piece of bone were again found north of the stump. In the northwestern

angle of the locus the soil is becoming gray-brown but the yellow-brown remains in the northeastern section of the locus near the rocks. The southern part of the locus remains rocky. In clearing the soil, significant amounts of old, decayed roots were found as well. Following the third pick pass, the stump in the middle of locus 8 was removed with a pick axe and the soil was cleaned up. A fourth pick pass was completed in locus 8 . Next to no artifactual material was found. The soil remains yellow-brown in the southern and eastern sections of the locus. This pick pass avoided the western angle of the locus because of the color change in that area.

PM

A pick pass was completed in locus 8 , the area picked continues to be a yellowish-brown. No artifacts were recovered while the soil was shoveled into buckets and sorted at the wheelbarrow. More stones continue to be uncovered. A sixth pick pass was done avoiding the gray-brown soil in the northwestern corner and the concentration of stones in the southern angle. Soil continues to be the same yellow-brown soil with

tiny white and yellow limestone inclusions. The stones in the southern angle were defined and swept. No artifacts were found. We are now ~8cm below the new soil and the yellow-brown limestone included soil continues to dive. It appears that the new soil is resting on top of part of locus 8 , part of locus 8 may have been erosional fill. The floor of locus 8 was scraped to level it and remove the remaining loose soil. This soil is very dense and clay-like, the new soil is considerably looser. The north and east baulk walls were trimmed. Roots were clipped and soil was sorted. We will close locus 8 tomorrow to open locus 11 in order to explore the gray-brown artifact included soil.
