Daily Log: 20 July 2007

20 July 2007, Friday

AM:

We began working in the southwestern extension, locus 12 and 13. A pickpass was made over the northern half of the extension (locus 12). A very shallow pickpass was made over locus 12 on Thurs. the 19 th of July, and this half of the extension is much higher than the southern half due to a slope that is downward from north to south. The soil is relatively loam-like with a root mat layer that is medium dark brown. A few very worn pieces of terracotta were recovered, but not pottery from this pickpass. All loosened soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. A few small rocks were loosened from the surface as well. Several small roots were exposed and clipped with hand tools. The loam-like topsoil was removed from locus 12 and the terracotta and top soil had been removed from locus 13 (which is the southern half of the southwestern extension) yesterday, so it was decided to declare a new locus (14) over the entire southwestern extension. Baulk walls were trimmed in Loci 12 and 13 and small roots were clipped. Opening photos and elevations were measured and recorded for locus 14.

Opening elevations for locus 14/closing elevations for loci 12 & 13:

NW Corner: 85 cm bd  =  22.59 m AE

NE Corner: 81 cm bd  =  22.63 m AE

SW Corner: 106 cm bd  =  22.38 m AE

SE Corner: 109 cm bd  =  22.35 m AE

Per instruction from the director, the team moved back to the southeastern extension (locus 11), in order to level the floor. The soil here is light brown with an olive and yellowish tint and has a flaky galestra-like texture. The floor was leveled with trowels and loosened soil was sorted and moved into buckets to be dumped. While scraping the southwestern corner of locus 11 extension, a small patch of soil containing a concentration of carbon was loosened and special find #1 was recovered.

Find #1: Bronze Fragment (trenchbook page

)

142 cm bd  =  22.02 m AE

152.18 E; 99.66 S

Locus 11

In the southwestern corner of the locus 11 extension is the lowest corner, so we worked on leveling the floor to this elevation. This extension's southern wall is approx. 1 meter north of the road, which could possible be the cause of the low material content.

PM:

We finished working on leveling the floor of locus 11, and one person made a pickpass over the northern half of locus 14 (SW extension). Once the floor leveling was complete in locus 11, all efforts moved to the SW extension of locus 14. The loosened soil on the northern half of locus 14 was sorted, scraped into buckets with trowels and dumped. While sorting, special find # 2 was recovered.

Find # 2: Medieval pottery sherds (2 join) (See trenchbook pg.

)

80 cm bd  =  22.49 m AE

147.53 E; 95.03 S

Locus 14

A pickpass was made over the southern half of the trench (Locus 14 extension). The soul color and texture is consistent for the entire trench extension, medium brown with a loose clay like texture. The loosened soil from the southern half pickpass of the southwestern extension was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. Special find #3 was recovered.

Find #3: Bronze Slag

95 cm bd  =  22.49 m AE

146.80E; 96.08S

Locus 14

All loosened soil was sorted and removed from locus 14 and dumped.
