Daily Log: 23 July 2007

23 July 2007, Monday

AM:

We began by making a light pick pass over the southern half of the trench (locus 14). Small rocks were loosened during this pass. A few members of the team worked on sweeping and trimming baulk walls in the southeastern extension (locus 11). The loosened soil form the pickpass and baulk trim was sorted and troweled into buckets. We were close to the level in the southwest extension (locus 14) that the rock formation would be appearing, so we made the decision to use trowels to attempt to expose and define the rock formation. A few rocks are appearing in the northern half of the trench. While scraping in the northern half of the trench, a few pieces of ceramic are recovered. Small roots re exposed and clipped with hand tools. Larger rocks that could be a part of the rock formations in the main trench are not appearing yet, so we made a pickpass over the entirety of locus 14 extenstion. Loosened soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. A few pottery sherds, pieces of bone, and terracotta were recovered.

PM:

We started by making a second full pickpass over the entire locus 14 extenstion. Soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. Some larger rocks are starting to appear at the bottom of the pickpass. Some are

breaking into thin, flat pieces. Very little material is recovered and a khaki color is starting to appear as well. While removing the soil from this pickpass, special find #1 was recovered.

Find #1: Bronze Slag

Locus 14

91 cm bd = 22.53 m AE

147.43E; 94.59S

The rocks that are appearing in the northern half of the trench appear to be bedrock, not part of the rock formation in the main trench. More material was recovered from a small area in the northeast corner of locus 14.

Locus 11 finds:

Pottery: 1 sherd (hadle)

No Bone or terracotta

Locus 14 finds:

Terracotta: 2/3 bowl

Pottery: 49 sherds

Bone: 9 pieces

The soil remains a medium brown color with a loose clay like texture. It also appears that the soil on the lower half of the extension (locus 14) is packed much harder than the northern half of the trench.
