Pottery Summary

In T36 this season, a sizeable amount of pottery was recovered from loci 5 - 13 . Locus 5 , comprised of a heavily mottled soil associated with the post-destruction phase of the Orientalizing complex, yielded the most pottery; 852 sherds were recovered, including two fragments of a potnia theron strut which in all likelyhood is to be associated with the bucchero lotus palmette cut-out strut found last season ( Finds #10 and 10A p. 239 and Find #10 p. 109 respectively). Locus 6 , which appeared to be a burnt soil associated with the destruction of the Orientalizing complex, produced a large quantity of pottery (406 sherds), although this is notably less than Locus 5 .  In addition, a piece of ridged bucchero ( Find #2 p. 289 ) and a piece of ridged bucchero ( Find #2 p. 295 ) were recovered from this locus. Locus 7 , which contained a tile deposition, did not produce much pottery (96 sherds), nor did loci 9 - 13 ; Locus 11 was in fact completely sterile, as this locus was comprised of galestra. Locus 8 though yielded a fairly large quantity of pottery (374 sherds).

In all loci, impasto was the most common type of pottery found, with roughly equal amounts of coarseware and fineware recovered as well. Locus 5 yielded

the most bucchero (36 sherds), although not much bucchero was recovered throughout the trench this season.

All pottery found was orientalizing in type; no identifiable iron age or coil-made pottery was recovered.
