AM
Work began by defining and removing any loose rocks in locus 4's southwest corner. Due to the delineated soil within the curviture rock formation, it was decided that once the formation is photographed, the rocks be carefully lifted out and the soil underneath be excavated, paying close attention to any soil change. In addition, every 10 centimeters, soil samples will be bagged and used for floatation to better understand the soil context within the dark brown dense soil. The feature in locus 4 will now become locus 5 and will be an area 1.75 x 1 m and consists of a dark brown dense soil surrounded by yellowish brown flaky soil on the outside of the curving rocks.
Opening elevations and photographs were taken.
Locus 5 Opening Elevations:
1. 98 cm BD / 28.30 m AE
2. 100 cm BD / 28.28 m AE
3. 97 cm BD / 28.31 m AE
4. 90 cm BD / 28.38 m AE
Locus 5 Trench Layout:
Excavation of locus 5 began using trowels and defining the line of rocks while removing them gently once they became loose. Underneath the rocks the soil continues to be dark brown
clay-like dense soil. Within locus 5 material is consistently small to medium sized tile fragments within or just beneath the rocks. In addition, just underneath the small to medium sized rocks, another layer of medium to small sized rocks appeared. Once the rocks were all exposed, photographs were taken and the rocks were drawn on millimeter paper.

From now on, each 10 cm or new layer of rocks are removed, the change will be termed a cut.

Work continued drawing the first cut of rocks on millimeter paper. After the rock formation was drawn, the next cut was beginning to be excavated, moving from the east to west using trowels and lifting any loose rocks.
Locus 5 Rock Formation Cut #1:
There was a delay in the work day for about an hour due to rain. After the break, work continued scraping back the formation in locus 5 cut #1 from east to west. Pottery and small worn tile continues to appear and the soil is remaining a dark brown dense clay like soil. The soil within the rock formation cut #1 is beginning to appear lighter brownish yellow at the edges and is also flakier in texture. However, the soil within remains the same dark brown dense soil as before. This darker area is roughly 1.27m x 65 cm in diameter. A tiny fragment of a bucchero sherd was recovered within cut #1. There are also some small

fragments of carbon appearing in the west of the rock formation in cut #1. Once the loose dirt was gathered and buckets were dumped, the trench was tarped after end of day elevations were taken.
Locus 5 End of Day Elevations Cut #1:
