This morning the cut in MNO/93-94 was taken down to a depth of ca. 40-45cm. The soil here was mostly grey-brown in color, very rooty and contained large pockets of disintegreated plaster. In addition, the soil was also notable for its extremely loose consitency- a condition which many indicate that this area at one time served as a fill site. The soil also contained a great deal of carbon and some burnt stone. Also, there was discoverd a large amount of hardened red clay, sometimes in large chunks. This red clay material, some of which was previously encountered on the floor ( see AC VI p. 142 ), was found surrounded by plaster and small rocks. The majority of the red-clay was encountered in N/94, begining at a depth of ca. 35cm. However, other small hunks were discovered at deeper levels in the other meters excavated. Two cassette of mixes tile and plaster (50% tile, 50% plaster),
some burned, were removed from the cut. One box of mixed pottery, in worn condition, was also found. In addition, a column base was uncovered in NO/93-94, at a depth of ca. 45cm. The base was ina highly disintegrated state, badly damaged by the roots of a stump lying above its southern half in meters O/93-94.
A topsoil cut was taken to a depth of ca. 10-20cm in meters J/92-95 and K/95. The soil removed was mostly the "dump" soil pushed over the area when the site was bulldozed on July 14. Two cassette of mixed tile and plaster (50% tile, 50% plaster), in worn condition, was removed from the cut. In addition, one-quarter of a box of worn pottery was also discoverd.
P.M.
This afternoon the cut in J/91-93 was taken down to a depth of ca. 40cm. The soil in the cut was a grey-brown in color and contained a large amount of roots and small rocks. A great deal of worn tiles (2 cassette) occuring mostly in large pieces, was also removed from the cut. Only one-half a caseetta of worn plaster was discovered. The pottery recovered (2 boxes) included fragments of all fabrics, mostly in worn condition, but also some bucchero and fineware. In addition, one-half a cassetta of large pieces of pithos was also discovered.
The cut in KL/95 was taken down to a depth of ca. 35cm. The soil here was grey-brown in color and included large amounts of shale, especially in meter L. Only one quarter of a cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (80% tile, 20% plaster), all in worn condition, was removed from the cut. A few fragments of worn pottery were also discovered.
