A.M.

This morning the cut in J/91-93 was taken down to a depth of ca. 22-65cm. Three layers of soil were encountered in the cut. The first layer was grey-brown in color, contained some small rocks and extended to a depth of ca. 30-40cm. One cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (80% tile, 20% plaster) in worn condition was removed from the grey-brown soil. In addition, only a few fragments of worn pottery were found at this level.

The second layer encountered was a dense plaster layer, yellow in color and extending to a depth of ca. 60-65cm. A large concentration of tile, possibly a "fall", was uncovered in the plaster layer, begining at a depth of ca. 40-45cm. This tile concentration was heavisest in meters J/92-93 and seemed to continue southward into meter J/94. The concentration, moreover, also included several large pieces of pithos and a great deal of pottery (2 boxes), including a finely preserved

redware foot ( see p. 139 #4 ) and an apparently complete pot base. Two cassette of small pieces of tile and plaster (90% tile, 10% plaster) were removed from around the tile concentration in the plaster layer. The third layer of soil encountered was a black burn later which began at a depth of ca. 60-65cm. This burn layer contained a few fragments of blackened pottery and tile and had at its becase a blackened rock "pack". In addition, some of the tile from the concentration in the plaster layer above extend into the black burn layer. However, none of these pierces displated any signs of burning.

In JK/95, the cut was extended to a depth of ca. 35-40cm. The soil in the cut was grey brown in color and contained a large amount of rock, especially shale. One cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (90% tile, 10% plaster) in worn condition was removed from the cut. In addition, a few framents of worn

pottery and some bone were also discoverd. No other material was found.

In O/93-94, the area around the stump was cleared down to a depth of ca. 35-40cm. The soil here was dark-brown in color and contained a large amount of both roots and small rocks. One cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (80% tile, 20% plaster) was removed from around the stump. In addition, a small amount of worn pottery, including several fragments of fineware, was discovered on the west side of the stump in meter O/93.

In M/92, the baulk beneath the stump and the base of the stump was worked down to floor level. One quarter of a cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (70% tile, 30% plaster) was removed from this area. In addition, a large amount of pottery (1 1/2 boxes) was removed from both the stump and baulk. A few fragments of worn pithos were also discovered.

P.M.

This afternoon the cut in J/94-95 was taken down to a depth of ca. 55-60cm. The soil in the cut was grey-brown in color and contianed a large amount of rock, especially shale. One half a cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (90% tile, 10% plaster) in worn condition was removed from the grey-brown soil. In addition, one half box of badly worn pottery was also recovered. No other material was discovered.

Also photos were taken of both the genral area and tile concentration in J/91-93.
