Locus 9

AM

Yesterday's pick passes revealed several seeming concentrations of terracotta: in the Southwestern corner of the trench; in the North-central meter abutting the baulk wall; the Southwestern corner of Locus 7 ; and the South-central meters near the baulk wall. In addition to these concentrations of terracotta, a few large stones, larger than any so far revealed, have been found in the Southeastern quadrant of the trench. In order that these areas are better preserved, it has been decided that for now work in these areas will be performed using handpicks and trowels. The areas in between will be lightly picked with a pick axe.

During the first light pick pass in the Western third of the trench, some terracotta and a few sherds of pottery were found. Material overall is in very

small quantities and mostly restricted to the areas previously described. Stones larger than three fists have also been found in the area, and so passes will be lighter.

Soil is hand-sorted over buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. Soil is a dark brown with bluish-gray mottled inclusions, and is clumpy and claylike in texture.

A pick pass was made in the Northeastern quadrant of the trench and hand-sorted. Some stones appear and are left in place. A light pick pass was made in the central meter of the trench. Material is primarily terracotta, and in small quantities overall.

Locus 9 is further characterized by having terracotta of large sizes and well-preserved. The average size is palm-sized, although several fragments span larger measurements.

A light pass in the Western third of the trench has uncovered a large pan tile.

Now that the stones have been more obvious in the Southeastern quadrant, work will continue by means of handpicks and trowels to gingerly scrape the floor of the trench to a level surface and to define the stones that appear.

PM

The trench floor continued to be leveled, and stones/terracotta continued to be defined.

The baulk walls were worked on. Locus 7 was not worked on.
