A.M.

Opening elevations were taken, and they were:

  • A (NW corner): 209.5 cm b.d.
  • B (NE corner): 204 cm b.d.
  • C (center): 210 cm b.d.
  • D (SW corner): 204 cm b.d.
  • E (SE corner): 203 cm b.d.

Began with baulk wall trimming as the excavators waited for the soil to dry out a little bit more.  During the trimming, 2 ivory pieces and an unusual piece of terracotta were identified.

After baulks were trimmed and the soil had been exposed and examined, Locus 5 was declared.  As no excavation had occurred in the trench yet this season, opening elevations and photos will be used as opening points and photos for the locus.  Locus 5 has a dark, mottled color and has heavier terracotta and carbon inclusions than Locus 4 .  There also seems to be more terracotta that is vitrified or over-fired.

The pickaxe was used to test the soil in the corners of the trench, and it seems to be the case that a depth of a few centimeters throughout the trench, there are small rocks ranging from 10-20 cm in size.  A pick pass was completed and sorted in the northern quarter of the trench.

During the sorting, a piece of vitrified pottery, a piece of impasto stamped pottery, a piece of worked ivory, and a piece of ridged bucchero were taken down as special finds.

P.M.

The pickpass started in the morning continued to be sorted and was completed.  While sorting, a piece of oddly-shaped bucchero, 2 pieces of fine impasto with slip, a flake of bronze possibly resting on a bone, and a bronze ingot were found.  In addition, it was decided to define some large rocks in the northern portion of the trench.  While troweling in the area, the base of a bucchero figurine was found.
