Description The soil of locus 4 was a mottled soil; bits of eroded terracotta and plaster existed throughout the soil, causing the soil to appear either very yellow or pink in color. Flecks of carbon were also present in high quantities. Locus 4 spans the entire trench and appears to be a very deep locus. Upon the closing of the trench for the end of the season, locus 4 reached an average depth of approximately 35 cm and a soil change has not yet been reached; locus 4 will be reopened in the following season. Locus 4 produced a great deal of terracotta tile and pottery. Nearly 7 bowls of terracotta tile were recovered from this locus as well as 818 sherds of pottery; 437 sherds were impasto while 302 were fine impasto, 22 were coarseware, and 57 were bucchero. In addition, a fair amount of bronze was found in this locus, particularly in the northwest quarter of the trench.
