1 Continued 10 cm (40-50 cm b.s.) across meters M-O/71-70. Soil is same medium brown, finds parallel yesterday. Meter M/71 yielded most material. Pithos frags in M/70 were further cleaned exposing rim (?) in conjunction with larger bdoy. Left in situ til next cut. Finds included a moulded bucchero frag (#2) and frag. of cover tile with incised mark (#1). 4 frags of bone.
2. tile = 1/20 cassetta
pottery = 3 frags
Also initiated cleaning of large stump removed from baulk (northern of 1988 trench) in meter O/69. Proceeded until wetness of soil made it unfeasible. Pottery frags were orange ware, bucchero and impasto.
3. tile = 1/4 cassetta
pottery = 1/5 latte
Initiated cut of c. 50 cm in meters M-O/69. This will bring these three meters to level with M-O/70-71 - at which point we will proceed into more sensitive layers. M-O/69 is dominated by a large stump in M/N and roots of a stump previously removed from O/P/69.
Work halted for lunch.
P.M.
Proceeding with 50 cm cut in M-O/69. Rain threatening. c. 3:00 pm - stump in M-N/69 is being cleaned with hammer pick. Soil is dark brown except in O/69 where a lens of galaestra. (grey) w/ interspersed marbled schist runs about 30 cms below surfac into O/68-66.
Other observations on day: 2 pieces (impressed w/ reeds) of plaster in M/71 ... infrequent channel sits and other burnt pieces of tile/pottery. Also, infrequent finds of bone - none obviously worked and vitrified tile.
