Loose soil from beneath the stump removed yesterday scraped up and sorted. Finds collected as baulk trim. Hand pick and trowel used to level down and define the extent of the stone features observed yesterday. Simultaneously, the remaining baulk walls cut back in preparation for extending and taking opening photographs. While trimming the southern baulk wall, a fragment of bronze recovered.

Baulk Trim
All baulk walls have been trimmed. All efforts now focused on dropping the elevation around the stones in the western half of the trench to define them and understand their nature. When the stones were defined and swept down, it became apparent that the configuration of stones is slightly different than observed yesterday. Rather than running parallel to the western baulk wall as thought, they are a packing in the northwest corner intercepting the northern baulk wall about 1.70m from the NW corner and intercepting the western baulk wall about 1.50m from the NW corner creating a roughly triangular shape constrained by the baulk walls. The planned extension
should help clarify the nature and degree of intentionality of the feature.
PM
An "L"-shaped extension added to T-87's northwest side by extending lines off of the northern and southern baulk walls, as well as a line running perpendicularly through two pints dropped in the middle of the north and south baulk walls. Opening photographs of the extension, Locus 4 , taken as well as photographs of the stone feature in Locus 3 . Elevations and coordinates of Locus 4 are as follows:

Pick pass initiated in the southwest corner of Locus moving northward. Soil hand sorted into buckets and soil dumped into T-82 which has been fully documented, closed, and covered in tarp. Locus 4 is a dark brown soil, heavily included with organic debris and roots and stones 2-10cm in length. It is claylike and compacted, in part by being a foot path for the beginning of the 2016 season. Materials recovered include worn terra cotta and pottery as well as a fragment of iron and a fragment of slag.
