Started day laying out the trench using the baseline established on PC 1 grid point. Trench is established at coordinates:

NW corner: 10N/4W

NE corner: 10N/1W

SE corner: 7N/1W

SW corner: 7N/4W

Datum point with absolute elevation 29.75m established on tree 2m east of the PC 1 baseline.

Began clearing trench of organic material left from clearing by sweeping in preparation for photographs and locus declaration. Near center of trench is a collection of stones being carefully left in place, swept, and minimally defined by trowel. The stones are on average 9cm long and 8cm wide. Ten stumps are scattered throughout the trench. Stones and stumps noted on trench drawing.

Dirt dump established in an old trench about 25m west of the trench. Terra cotta dump established 2m south of the dirt dump (both in well area).

Prepared to open Locus 1 over the whole area. Opening elevations:

NW corner: 28.59m A.E.

NE corner: 28.43m A.E.

SE corner: 28.52m A.E.

SW corner: 28.65m A.E.

Center of rock formation: 28.46m A.E.

Ground broken in Locus 1 , dark brown organic debris rich humus layer. First pick pass in eastern most meter strip 2-4cm deep. Revealed new soil type, medium brown and claylike consistency as well as small rocks 7-9cm in length but with no regular pattern. Dirt sorted and cleaned from trench. Second pick pass 2-4cm deep begun in southern most meter strip to continue exploration of the organic layer. Revealed same soil change and rocks. Dirt sorted and cleaned from trench. Roots clipped.
