Opening Elevations

  • A: 137 cm b.d. (27.61 m absolute elevation)
  • B: 135 cm b.d. (27.63 m AE)
  • C: 136 cm b.d. (27.64 cm AE)
  • D: 134 cm b.d. (27.64 m AE)
  • E: 139 cm b.d. (27.59 m AE)

Since it is believed that the trench level is right on top of a new, yellow-brown soil, today opened with a pickpass through the southwestern half of the trench in order to lower those meters in preparation for the closing of Locus 2 with the removal of the remaining galestra-like soil.

After the first pickpass, scraping and work on baulks determined that the next soil was still covered by a few centimeters of galestra-like soil.  As a result, another light pickpass was undertaken to clear the remainder.  This pickpass turned up a strange piece of ridged terracotta with circular indentations (Find 1) and a piece of possible lateral sima cavetto (Find 2).

After the pickpass was completed, time was spent scraping up the remainder of the Locus 2 soil, as well as working on baulk walls and removing the stump in the center of the trench, which was finally taken out.  Baulk wall work revealed the entire base of an impasto vessel (Find 3).

As the floor was cleaned and swept in preparation for photos after lunch, it was discovered that there were several small-to-moderate sized pieces of tile resting on top of the soil of Locus 3.

Pottery continues to be fairly numerous, so it has been decided to keep an eye out for any more profiles in order to take coordinates and better track the finds.

Baulk walls and leveling were finished in preparation for the closing of Locus 2.  Photos and eleveations were taken.

Closing elevations for Locus 2 / Opening for Locus 3:

  • A (NW corner):  142 cm below datum (27.56m absolute elevation)
  • B (NE corner): 138 cm b.d. (27.60 m AE)
  • C (center): 140 cm b.d. (27.58 m AE)
  • D (SW corner): 141 cm b.d. (27.57 m AE)
  • E (SE corner): 143 cm b.d. (27.55 m AE)
  • Terracotta for Locus 2: 1 1/4 bowls
  • Pottery for Locus 2: 94 pieces and 14 bones
  • Terracotta for Locus 2 baulk: 17 pieces
  • Pottery for Locus 2 baulk: 3 pieces

The soil of Locus 3 is a light yellowish-brown with some carbon inclusions.  It seems to be much less flaky than that of the previous locus.

After taking photos and measurements, we began another pickpass in the northern meters.  The terracotta of Locus 3 is in noticeably larger pieces with sharper breaks.  Opening elevations will be taken on Monday.

  • Terracotta for Locus 3: 3/4 bowls
  • Pottery for Locus 3: 36 pieces and 1 bone
