Daily log, July 28

AM

Work begins with a pick pass in the eastern half of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted over buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. Soil is consistent with Locus 10 : a mottled brown with grayish blue, yellowish gray, black, and white inclusions. Stones emerge near the baulk walls and material is found in small quantities of terra cotta and pottery. A bone fragment was found in the southeast corner.

Another pick pass was thrown in the western half of the trench. Soil is consistent with that described above. In the southern-central meter of the trench, near the southern baulk wall, a sherd of hand-made pottery (Special find #1) was found. This sherd is associated with several fragments of wheel-made pottery within an apparent concentration of pottery between several stones.

Special find # 1:

- Locus 10

- 22.43 mAE

- 55.41 E / 73.41 S

- Hand-made pottery

-

Because this special find represents a potentially different context, work will now focus on leveling the floor of the trench with handpicks and trowels and trimming baulk walls.

The sherds associated with Special find #1 will also be special found for context. There is one base (Special find #2) and a large body sherd (Special find #3).

Special find #2:

- Locus 10

- 22.43 mAE

- 55.29 E / 73.51 S

- Wheel-made base in association with hand-made pottery (special find #1)

-

Special find #3:

- Locus 10

- 22.47 mAE

- 73.50 S / 55.19 E

- Wheel-made body sherd in association with hand-made pottery (special find #1)

-

While baulk walling in the southeastern corner, some fragments of bone and pottery have been recovered, apparently from higher elevations than the current trench floor.

Leveling of the trench floor continues as baulk wall

trimming is done. The baulk wall has revealed the presence of several stones of hand to head size and some large fragments of terra cotta. While baulk trimming, the southwestern corner is beginning to reveal an orange-like gray, highly mottled and claylike soil. Several sherds of pottery, few terra cotta fragments, and no bone have been found n that area of Locus 10 . At the same time, the southeastern corner has revealed the presence of a few small, rounded, and smooth stones, possibly river stones.

PM

The afternoon began with the trench being cleaned, with walls being trimmed, and the floor scraped down. It has been determined that, given the presence of a new type of soil being in concert with the season coming to an end, the trench will be closed. Closing elevations and photos will be taken of currently open loci and the whole trench.

Loci 7 and 10 were closed. CB-61 was closed.

Closing elevations, Locus 10 :

- NE: 22.34 mAE

- NW (72 S / 54.55 E): 22.34 mAE

- NW (72.28 S / 54 E): 22.32 mAE

- SW: 22.33 mAE

- SW: 22.36 mAE

Locus 10 finds:

- Tile: 1/5 bowl

- Pottery: 20 sherds

- Bone: 1 fragment

Baulk finds:

- Tile: 5/6 bowl

- Pottery: 22 sherds

- Bone: 8 fragments

Note: no work was done in Locus 7 .
