Pottery Summary Analysis

A total of 1,542 sherds of pottery were recovered from CB-61. Of the 10 open loci, only Locus 7 was not excavated and thus revealed no material finds. Locus 4 is a small stone feature approximately 50 centimeters in diameter near the center of the trench and the pottery finds from that locus were low overall, with a total of 29 sherds. Locus 5 underlies Locus 4 and is similarly low in quantity of pottery, with 34 sherds.

Loci 3 , 6 , and 8 account for the largest quantities of pottery found in CB-61, with 16%, 17%, and 40%, respectively, of the total ceramic count. Locus 8 shows the highest number of pottery by far. In Locus 9 , impasto sherds represent the largest percentage of fabric type at 94%. Loci 8 , 9 , and 10 revealed the largest sizes of tile and pottery on average.

In general, there are more sherds of impasto than of other wares recovered in CB-61 and in those loci range from 55-94% of the finds; however, the largest proportion of fabric in Loci 1 and 2 is fine impasto. Bucchero is found only in Loci 3 , 4 , 6 , and 8 , as well as in the Baulk Trim finds. Notably, for a region of extreme erosional deposition very little medieval pottery was recovered from the trench. Two sherds of medieval pottery were found in Locus 2 . These sherds represent 6% of the ceramic finds from the locus and both sherds are non-diagnostic. Therefore, it is reasonable to infer that from Locus 3 onward, excavated loci represent a contextually secure matrix of erosional material. Further, it is likely that Locus 8 represents the latest depositional phase of securely non-erosional contextualized material.
