tile - 1 1/4 cassetta

pottery - 1/3 latte

1.   Removed second level of tile in the tile line.  A 3rd layer of tile is revealed in N-O/67, but to a depth of 93 cm in M/67-66 no further tile is revealed.  Soil from this mesti work is our typical mixed medium-dark brown w/ lots of plaster chunks and some charcoal.  Last of tiles in O-N/67 bottomed out at c. 95 cm in typical mixed soil.  *WRONG

2.   Continuing to excavate O/67 down to c. 105 cm no that tile is removed.  Soil throughout is mixed soil but with varying background colors as noted on NM II, p. 187 .  Although we thought tile line in O/67 terminated, this was not the case.  A further layer of pan tile fragments was revealed.  These sat atop a group of small rocks which appear as

the tile line, but move to west of main axis.  These rocks rest at bottom of cut c. 105 cm.  No real burn layer encountered, but frequent chunks of charcoal.

3.   Cut in N-O/64-65 90-95 cm.  Soil in western 3/4 of O/64 is light brown with only minimal inclusions of charcoal - no plaster.  In remainder of O/64 and all of O/65-N/64-65 soil is typical jumbled mixture with main matrix being red-brown.  In N/64-65 picking was impossible due to concentration of tile frags - much like those in M/64-65.  Also discovered in N/65 is large pithos frag on eastern edge - possibly associated with rim frag in M/65 N baulk.  Also of note is that some pithos and tile frags were burnt but not in burnt soil.
