pottery - 1 2/5 latte

1.   N/67 95-105 cm cut. Came down on burn layer in N 1/2 of cut.  Several large rocks removed from Eastern Flank.  Tile all in small chunks, reveal vitrified and several other from within burn layer.  No furhter evidence of "tile line" of previous cut.  Though tile was found in general vicinity.  Pottery is mixed, lots of bone.

tile - 1/2 cassetta

pottery - 2 4/5 latte

2.   M/67 95-105 cm cut.  Burn layer here dominates most of the cut.  Tile was in small chunks, some burnt and from within the burn layer.  As usual or this trench, majority of the pottery came out of the burn layer.  As usual lots of bone in burn.

tile - 3 cassetta

pottery - 3 latte

3.   M-N/64-65   90-100 cm

Soil had largely red-brown cast and was very mixed with large quantities of small chunks of plaster and fragment charcoal.  Occasional areas had nearly 50% plaster 50% soil in conglomeration.  Soil is not discolored by burn material but did yield some burnt pithos frags.  Red cast of soil may be result of large amounts of small tile fragments.  Also, particularly in O-N/65, large numbers of pithos were removed.*  The tile and pithos frags are predominately in this cut, but the cut does terminate with some frags embedded in soil.  In M/64-65, the tile concentration began at c. 85, and in N/64-65 at c. 90 cm.

Note on finds #  and #  .

These two pottery fragments were found in direct association with each other, held within the matrix of soil as described above, and actually touching each other.

4.   O/66 95-105

Most of this meter is taken up by the stump in O-N/66-65.  Area excavated held a lightly mixed soil of medium brown color with infrequent plaster inclusions.  This terminates at the tope of the burn layer.  At roughly 90 cm tile can be seen protruding from stump (i.e. W 1/2 of O/66).
