Daily Log

AM

Began the day by declaring 2 new loci. The redder soil which has small clumps and small rocks and teracotta and appears similar to the soil in locus 2 will be declared Locus 3 .  It has a munsell designation of 2.5Y 4/4 olive brown.  The darker soil which is characterized by clumps of dirt about half the size of a fist and small rocks.  There is also a higher concentration of terracotta compared to the other loci and deposits of carbon.  The soil will be declared locus 4 .  It has a munsell designation of 2.5Y 5/6 light olive brown.

- Locus 4 stretches approximately from the east baulk to 110 cm west.

Now we are attempting to understand the relationship between loci 3 and 4 .  It seems that locus 4 continues underneath locus 3 .  Therefore, in oder to see the extent of locus 4 we are making 20-30 cm pick passes moving across locus 3 from east to west. Whiule digging in locus 3 we are uncovering some larger fragments of terracotta and more modern debris.

PM

Due to the large amount of terracotta appearing in locus 3 it has been decided that a new locus will be declared tomorrow.  The rest of the day will be spent trimming the baulk walls for photographs.
