Daily Log

AM

Began the day trying to understand the extent of the new dark soil. To do this we began a series of 20 cm pick passes moving east to west across the trench.  We have found that this new dark soil extends across the entire trench and will be designated Locus 2 .  While leveling the trench for photographs a small piece of carbon was found.

After uncovering the new soil throughout the trench the baulk walls were leveled in preparation for photographs.

PM

The new soil discovered across the entire trnch has small clumps and small rocks and more terracotta than the previous soil. It also contains modern debris. The munsell designation is 5YR 4/2 Dark reddish gray.  The soil is designated Locus 2 .

Photographs Taken

Pick pass across the eastern half of the trench which continued to unearth pieces of modern debris.  Small pieces of carbon were also uncovered.  Pieces of bone were discovered with clear signs of butchery which were included with the Locus's pottery.  Swept the trench to try to gain a better understanding of the soil.  The pick pass in the eastern meter of the trench uncovered a different darker soil which it appears should be declared a new locus.  The soil has the same type of material as the more reddish soil in the western portion of the trench but it is much darker and contains carbon.  It now appears that the earlier locus designation was incorrect. However, since the the entire trench was declared Locus 2 this morning, we will begin tomorrow by declaring the dark soil in the east locus 4 and declaring the redder west soil Locus 3 .
