Finished working on the baulk walls in preparation for declaring a new locus across the entire trench.  The pick pass across the western 2/3 of the trench revealed that the locus 4 soil did in fact extend underneath locus 3 .  This soil is now present in the entire trench.  The soil will be declared locus 5 across the entire trench.

Elevations A.D. Locus 5

  • NE - .38m
  • SE - .34m
  • NW - .48m
  • SW - .51m
  • Center - .43m

Locus 5 is characterized by a darker soil which is coarser than that in Locus 3 .  Also it contains small rocks and some terracotta.  However, the amount of terracotta is much less than what was uncovered at the lower elevations of l ocus 3 .  There is also modern debris found in the strata.  The munsell designation is 10 YR 5/3 Brown.  We began a pick pass across the eastern 2 meters of the trench.  Still turning up the dark locus 5 soilwith a bit of carbon.  Still finding modern debris.

PM

Did a pick pass across the western meter of the trench.  We then picked the middle third of the trench which revealed a vitrified piece of terracotta.
