1.   M/66  90-105cm

Soil in this meter had three distinct layers.  Upper was a dark-brown soil with lots of plaster flecks and some charcoal.  Intermediate was a very red-brown layer that held majority of tile, some of which was in large fragments (c. 90-100 cm).  The last layer contained pockets of non-burn - a whole burn layer was not encountered but areas of burn were revealed.

pottery - 1 latte

2.   N/66  90-105 cm

Similar soil to M/66, yet more mixed and not in distinct strata.  As with M/66, pockets of very red-brown soil produced tile and fine orangeware.  Concentration of tile was to W 1/2.  Part of W 1/2 is stump.

tile - 3 cassetta

pottery - 1 latte

3.   M/64-65  90-100 cm

Large concentration of tile and to lesser extent pithos frags - mostly small and worn.  Cut was in the mixed soil with plaster frags in predominantly dark brown soil.  Cut terminates in similar soil - no contact with any burn layer.  As with O-N/64-65, cut terminates with more frags of tile in trench floor.  Much less fine ware was retrieved today in M/64-65 than in O-N/64-65.

tile - 1 1/2 cassetta

pottery - 3 boxes

Work this afternoon was concentrated on removing the soil both around and underneath the stump in meters M-O/65-66.  The soil beneath the stump consisted of at least four distinct strata:

  1. a layer of topsoil/light-grey soil to a depth of ca. 45 cm.
  2. a layer of red brown soil with high concentrations of disintegrated plaster to a depth of ca. 65 cm
  3. a layer of dark-grey/brown soil with large pieces of carbon to a depth of ca. 85-90 cm.
  4. a layer of red-brown soilw ith high concentrations of disintegrated plaster and carbon to a depth of ca. 100-110 cm.

The majority of tile and plaster removed from the stump as well as a considerable amount of fineware pottery came from the last two layers of the stump.  The final layer as yielded

several small pieces of bronze sheet and a few burned fragments of pithos.
