1. Making a 10 cm cut in M/70. As in M/71, this cut terminates roughly at spot where burn layer begins to fade. Finds are minimal. As one moves to the west in M/71, the burn material disappears totaly and the cut is completely a medium-light brown soil with flecks of plaster, mica and very infrequent bits of charcoal. Soil is not as dark as mottled soil above burn layer and is definitely not burnt. Tile is very small pieces and worn. 3 dozen pieces bone.

2. Cut extended to N/70.
In this meter the cut appears to come down to the burn layer, i.e. the burn layer is lower as it moves south in 70. As we are coming
into the burn layer, rather than out of it, it appears that finds are increasing. In parts of N/70, the cut terminates at a change out of burn ... perhaps the burn layer is shallower as one proceeds southernly as well as at a deeper level. Also of note is that bone, as elsewhere in the burn layer, is very abundant. Cut not finished. Bone for day is 1 1/2 dz pieces.
OBSERVATIONS ON BURN : Although further cuts in these areas (M-O/71-70) will be necessary to determine nature of burn - preliminary observations are:
- burn contains much more cultural and bone material than strata above
- burn appears at higher level at nothern edge of trench, either sloping deeper to the south - or perhaps terminating
- if the latter is true, perhaps this is not a stratum a much as a lens, and perhaps bone material may give indication of function.
