A.M. in magazzino

P.M.

tile = 1 1/2 dozen small pieces

pottery = 1 1/2 latte

1.   Continued cut in N/70.  Burn layer does not end with this cut.  As recorded yesterday, minimal tile recovered, but lots of pottery and bone.  Along SW edge of N/70 there is even more burn material, a very blackened ashy soil.  Bone = 1 1/2 dz pieces

tile - 1/3 cassetta

pottery - 2 1/3 latte

2.   Cut extended to O/70.  This is not a burn layer.  Soil is medium-dark brown with inclusions of plaster and mica/pebbles.  This is analagous to the soil of cuts above the latest.  Either the burn layer is deeper or nonexistent here.  Still not much tile and pottery/bone concentration is decreasing.  Particularly the bone.  As one moves to the

north western edge of the cut, the burn layer appears to just begin at bottom of cut.  Again pottery concentrations are stronger in association with burn material.  Pithos frags and some tile frangs were recovered from the southern non-burn area of O-70.

OBSERVATIONS:

  1. The medium-dark soil with inclusion found in south and southeastern area of O/70 is very much like soil recorded in cuts before encountering burn layer, with the exception that is darker shade.
  2. Not all the material recovered from the burnt soil is likewise burnt.  Some is discolored and not burnt.
