Locus 3

In the last meter from the east, three stones 10-20cm in length revealed beneath the soil which was sorted and removed in the NW corner. They all appear to be at the same height and so may be an associated feature; they will be carefully investigated in the next pass. The third pick pass completed and a fourth begun again in the east moving westward in one meter strips. Soil hand sorted into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 3 . The soil pack includes high concentrations of roots and medium concentrations of small stones (2-7cm). Artifacts recovered include terra cotta and pottery. Pick pass paused after the first meter. Roots clipped.

PM

Fourth pick pass resumed in the second meter from the east. Soil remains consistent with Locus 3 , hand sorted into buckets. Roots included in soil pack in high concentration

as well as a medium concentration of 2-7cm stones. Terra cotta and pottery recovered. While picking in the third meter from the east, a fragment of vitrified terra cotta recovered with a modern break and found to join with Find 4; it is therefore being reassociated.

Find 4b: Fragment of Vitrified Terra Cotta

72.63E/48.36S

25.56m A.E.

Locus 3

Joins with today's Find 4

The fourth pick pass finished. The three stones seen at the end of the last pick pass defined and investigated. They were found not to be associated with any other stones or each other. The three stones removed; the largest 15-20cm, but the other two 5-10cm, the same size as the other small stones included in Locus 3 . A fifth pick pass initiated in the east moving westward in one meter swaths.

Soil sorted by hand into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 3 , Soil pack included with roots and small stones. Terra cotta, pottery, bone, and slag found. In the westernmost meter, a fragment of bronze recovered.
