Work commenced this morning in both Locus 4 and Locus 8 . In Locus 4 leveling down to the hard packed, mottled, carbon included soil continues in the northernmost meter moving towards the large rock feature which runs south from CA 73 into CA 72 before turning almost perpendicularly westward. In Locus 8 , the sounding, excavation continues in tandem with the sounding in CA 73 which has almost achieved the same depth. The goal of both soundings is ultimately to drop them as much as possible to reveal more about the stratigraphy of these locations. Hand picks and trowels used in both loci to lower their elevations and every third bucket sieved. In Locus 4 pottery, terra cotta, and vitrified terra cotta found in small concentrations as well as a fragment of worked chert.

Locus 4

In Locus 8 terra cotta, pottery, and bone recovered in small concentrations. Additionally it has been decided to collect any further slag recovered from Locus 8 in bulk because it was discovered in the magazzino using a magnet that many fragments of what were thought to be vitrified terra cotta were in fact slag. Below the tile feature running roughly north to south through Locus 8 an alignment of rocks about 10-20cm in length are appearing and being defined. There are a few fragments of tile packed within the rock feature as well.

In Locus 4 the soil removed continues to be heavily carbon included, and both bone and slag are also being found in small concentrations. Excavation is being carried out north of the large rock feature, technically within the bounds of CA 72, but recorded in CA 73's book in order to keep materials coming from within the feature together, in order to also discover and uncover the hard packed, mottled, carbon included soil, if it is preserved there.

One bucket from Locus 4 sieved and a fragment of pottery about 3cm in length recovered.

During leveling along the western baulk wall a fragment of bone inlay was recovered.

Locus 4

In Locus 8 the rock and tile feature is being further defined and the soil pack around it leveled off at a consistent elevation rather than excavate any deeper. Very small amounts of pottery, bone, and terra cotta recovered from Locus 8 .

A bucket from Locus 4 sieved and no artifacts recovered.

In Locus 4 leveling has progressed nearly to the large rock feature. Baulk walling is simultaneously ongoing along the western baulk

wall with all artifact types being collected in bulk.

Upon inspection of the Locus 4 pottery box two decorated pottery fragments recovered and furthermore recovered a fragment of molded pottery.

Locus 4

PM

Baulk walling continued on the western baulk as well as begun on the eastern baulk wall. All materials collected in bulk. Baulk walling also commenced in the Locus 8 sounding and because the soil is all from one locus the finds are collected with the rest of the Locus 8 material. Baulk walling completed along the western baulk wall, while it continues in the east as well as in Locus 8 . Began scraping down the southern half of Locus 4 where the wet soil dried out in order to better view the hard packed, mottled, carbon included soil there. Artifacts recovered during the scraping of Locus 4 are being collected with the baulk wall finds because they may have been displaced during last Wednesday's heavy rain.

Supplemental Find 3: Iron Fragment

66.00-71.00E/36.00-39.00S

~ 27.00m A.E.

Baulk Trim

Baulk walling completed along the eastern wall. Scraping now commenced through Locus 5 being careful to remove soil which flowed in during the heavy rain and to redefine the tile and rock feature. Any artifacts collected during scraping in Locus 5 will also be collected in baulk finds because they may have been displaced by rain.

One bucket sieved from Locus 8 and a small impasto rim fragment recovered.

Today's progress in completing the leveling through both Locus 4 and Locus 8 documented by aerial photographs, especially in the face of impending rain this evening. Baulk walling continues in Locus 8 . Scraping finished in Locus 4 and ongoing in Locus 5 . Rain ended work early.
