Took elevations of north extension - A.D:

  • NE - .37m
  • NW - .52m
  • SE - .32m
  • SW - .46m

We are opening a new extension 1 meter north of the western most meter of Locus 9 .  This extension will be designated Locus 10 . Locus 10 contains the same soil as locus 9 .  We are hoping to uncover an extension of the feature found in VT-2.  We are beginning a pick pass across Locus 10 .  So far we are only coming up with soil filled with organics.  There are also large chunks of worn terracotta and modern debris.  Commenced another pick pass and it seems we have encountered stones in the north west part of Locus 10 which may be part oif the the feature in VT-2.  We are now beginning to trowel around these stones to define their extent.  While troweling we uncovered a ridged rim sherd (Find #1).   Continuing to trowel in Locus 10 .  It appears that we have come across a large tile spread with pottery mixed in it.  We will now define its extent and prepare for the declaration of a new locus and their removal.

PM

While defining the tiles a piece of red slip ware was uncovered (Find #2).

Took Photographs

Declared the tile spread Locus 11 .  the locus is characterized by large pieces of terracotta all across the area with pieces of pottery intermixed.  There is also some organic material in the southern part of the Locus.  There is a dark brown soil in between the tiles.  The munsell designation is 10 YR 3/3 dark brown.  The locus extends across the entire north extension of the trench.

Elevations of Locus 11 A.D.

  • NE - .23m
  • NW - .31m
  • SE - .20m
  • SW - .31m
  • Center - .19m

We are now beginning to remove the tiles to see if there is anything significant there.  While removing the tiles an iron shaft was uncovered (Find #3).
