Daily Log

AM

Began with a pick pass across Locus 17 to try to lower that area of the trench to the level of Locus 15 .  We are also continuing to remove the Locus 1 5 soil with trowels so that we might understand its extent.  While sorting through the pick pass a piece of unusual terracotta was uncovered (Find #1).  Also an incised black slip rim was found (Find #2).  While troweling in Locus 15 two buccheroid rims were uncovered (Finds # 3 and 5) along with a buccheroid rim with an incision (Find #4).  Commenced another pick pass.  We are still turning up the same soil but we are uncovering less terracotta and pottery.  This pick pass also failed to produce any modern material.  There are small sections of carbon appearing in the soil.  We have now uncovered a new hard packed soil across the entire area of Locus 17 .  The area is now at the same level as locus 15 and the area of VT-2 west of the stone feature.  We are now leveling Locus 17 in preparation for the declaration of a new locus.  While excavating in locus 15 a large diagnostic piece of tile with two ancient breaks was uncovered (Find #6).

PM

We are finishing the leveling of both locus 15 and 17 at the level of the hard packed soil.  While troweling in

Locus 15 a diagnostic pantile fragment was uncovered (Find #7).  We have now also begun to work on the baulks.  While working on the baulks a large terracotta plate fragment was found (Find #8) Also, while cleaning up Locus 15 an impasto rim with an incision was found (Find #9).  We will end the day by attempting to remove any remaining dark soil from locus 15 .
