Daily Log

AM

We began the day by continuing to excavate Locus 15 .  At the same time we were also working on the baulk walls.

Took Photographs of the Stone Feature

We are now preparing to excavate the last section between VT-2 and VT-3 which has not yet been excavated.  This area will be designated Locus 16 . Locus 16 is characterized by a brown soil with many small rocks and worn pieces of terracotta and pottery in it.  There is also modern material and organics in it.  The soil has a munsell designation of 10 YR 5/4 Yellowish Brown.

Took Photographs

Began a pick pass across Locus 16 .  As we have continued to pick further down in Locus 16 we have begun to uncover a darker soil in the eastern area of Locus 16 which we will try to reveal across the entire locus.  Additionally, we have come across a large

volume of tile in the western portion of Locus 16 .  The tile is very loose and there are gaps in the soil around them which probably indicates thry are part of a modern dump.  While sorting we uncovered a tile fragment with a thumb print (Find #1).

PM

We are continuing to trowel down through locus 16 in an attempt to reveal the darker soil throughout the entire area.  We are also removing the large amount of tile in the western part of locus 16 because it now seems clear that it was a modern dump.  We are also simultaneously working in Locus 15 uncovering the new hard packed soil which was revealed across the whole area.  While troweling a black slip rim fragment was uncovered (Find #2).  Large amounts of carbon were found with it.  While sorting a warped pantile  was uncovered (Find #3).  We were able to uncover the darker soil across the entire area of Locus 16 and it will be declared Locus 17 . Locus 17 is characterized by a dark brown soil with small rocks in it.  It also contains modern debris and organic material.  Its munsell designation is 2.5 Y 5/4 light olive brown.  The locus is over the entire locus 16 area.
