25 July 2007, Thursday
AM: We began by taking closing elevations for locus 14 and closing elevations for locus 15/opening elevations for locus 16.
Closing Locus 14:
NW corner: 95 cm bd 22.49 m AE
NE corner: 95 cm bd 22.49 m AE
SW corner: 118 cm bd 22.26 m AE
SE corner: 118 cm bd 22.26 m AE
Closing Locus 15/Opening 16:
NW corner: 86 cm bd 22.58
NE corner: 94 cm bd 22.50
SW corner: 110 cm bd 22.34
SE corner: 110 cm bd 22.34
We swept and cleaned the floor of locus 15 and declared a new locus 16 in the eastern extension. The dark brown soil and loamus root mat was completely removed yesterday.
Locus 15 Finds:
Terracotta: 4 pieces
Pottery: 1 piece
Bone: 0 pieces
The team started in locus 16 by making a pickpass over the entire extension. The soil is lighter than the topsoil, medium brown with claylike texture that breaks apart easily. All soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. Some terracotta and pottery was recovered. Some small roots were exposed and clipped and small rocks were removed. A second pickpass
was made of the entire locus 16. All loosened soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. More terracotta and pottery was recovered. The soil remains medium brown with a loose clay like texture. A third pickpass was made over locus 16, loosened soil was sorted, troweled into buckets and dumped. The rock formation from locus 8 does not appear to extend into locus 16. The floor of locus 16 was leveled with that of locus 8 with trowels, and a much lighter yellowish grainy soil was exposed. Locus 16 was closed.
Locus 16 finds:
Terracotta: 1/2 bowl
Pottery: 24 sherds
Bone: 0 sherds
Locus 16 closing elevations:
NW corner: 100 cm bd 22.44 m AE
NE corner: 107 cm bd 22.37 m AE
SW corner: 118 cm bd 22.26 m AE
SE corner: 116 cm bd 22.28 m AE
PM:
Baulk walls of locus 16 were trimmed and closing elevations were measured and recorded. All efforts shifted to defining the rock feature along the southern wall of locus 8. Bone and pottery were recovered from this area, and a few more murex shells. Some loosely packed rocks are exposed similar to the rock formation to the north of where we are troweling. The soil around the rocks is a grayish color
with a loose grainy texture. Special find #1 was recovered here.
