Daily Log 27 July 2007

27 July 2007, Friday

AM:

We worked on exposing and defining rock on the southern wall of the main trench, locus 8. It appears that the rock concentration of the formation is lighter here, as there are fewer rocks. There is a natural slope in the area. Over the entire trench and extensions, and the northern half of the trench is a few centimeters higher than the southern half. We want to see if the rock formation follows this slope, which would mean that the rocks on the southern wall would be lower than the rest. Some rocks on the southern wall are discovered, but the concentration is lower on this side of the trench. Trowels are used to scrape down this area and some material is recovered while exposing these rocks. A shell concentration was exposed around a stump that sits centrally along the southern wall, and several more shells were recovered today, some bone and pottery as well.

PM:

We finished defining rocks on the southern wall, and began sweeping the floor of the trench and rock packing formation. One member of the team worked on leveling the area in the north west corner of locus 8, which is where a definite soil change

can be observed. The rock formation, now exposed, is an oval shape that spreads over most of locus 8. The soil directly around and under the rocks is a grayish color, and the formation and the grayish soil is surrounded by a much lighter yellowish galestra-like soil. The northwest corner of locus 8 was leveled in an effort to show the distinct difference in soil color. We used spray bottles to wet the soil in this area and trowels to level out the surface so that the distinction is very clear. Photos of this will be taken on Saturday 28 July 2007 in the morning light. Locus 8 was closed and excavation was completed. Closing elevations for locus 8 were measured and recorded.

Locus 8 closing elevations:

NW corner: 97 cm bd 22.47 m AE

NE corner: 96 cm bd 22.48 m AE

SW corner: 105 cm bd 22.39 m AE

SE corner: 117 cm bd 22.27 m AE

Locus 8 finds:

Terracotta: 1 bowl

Pottery: 98 sherds

Shell: 497 pieces

Bone: 61 pieces
