Morning

Work began by making a new but - it started in ABC/7.  At a depth of approximately 20 cm, bedrock was struck.  The bedrock was then exposed, followed, and cleaned down.  This was done in meters ABC/7 through ABC/5 - this 3 by 3 meter area (ABC/567) now has a bedrock floor.  The bedrock, however, is not a flat surface.  In C/5-7, the bedrock is at a depth of approximately 80-85 cm.  The bedrock then slopes down through B/5-7 - and in

A/5-7, it is at a depth of approximately 90 cm to one meter.  In A-7 the bedrock reaches its lowest depth - 1.05m.  The soil that was between the Gray Layer cut and the bedrock was simply the same greyish, clay like coil which was just above it.  Hence, the Gray Layer extends from the Red Layer to the bedrock.

Pottery was frequent in the area excavated today.  Most of it is very heavy coarseware sherds from large vessels, including several pieces of a large pithos.  It should be noted that more bucchero was found in this soil that was found in any of hte previous levels.  One nice bucchero handle (no markings) was found in A-5.  Tile was also frequent in this area.  B-5 produced the trench's first spindle whorl.
