Morning
Yesterday, meters ABC/5-7 were taken down to
of trench
bedrock. It was decided to terminate excavation in meters ABC/0-4 for the time being. Because meters ABC/7 produced a great deal of material (especially notable is the quantity of bronze - fragments of sheet and nails and tacks), it was decided to extend the trench to the east. Maintaining a 3 meter width (Alphabetical coordinates ABC), meters 8-10 were added to the already designated numerical coordinates 0-7.
Work began by clearing topsoil from meters ABC/8-10. Second, the Dark Brown Layer was removed, making the floor 30-40 cm in depth. As in meters ABC/5-7, this layer produced some pottery. This pottery consisted of a few bucchero fragments, but mostly coarseware. Tile was fairly frequent. It should be noted that 3 fragments of bronze sheet were found in the Dark Brown Layer - in A-8, B-8, and C-8. The cut was completed in meters ABC/8-10.
Next, an extention of the trench to the south was prepared for excavation. Trees and brush were cleared from a large area. Using numerical coordinates 6-8 as a
of trench
width, a prependicular grid of 8 meters in length was staked out. Alphabetical coordinates AA-HH will mark its length.

Afternoon
Work began by beginning a Red Layer cut in meters ABC/8. As in meters ABC/4-7, the soil continues to be redish and full of tile at this level (in meters ABC/8, the Red Layer is thicker than it was in ABC/4-7 - it is c. 40 cm in depth). However, there was very little pottery excavated - a few coarseware sherds.
As in meters ABC/4-7, there continues to be a lot of bronze. In addition to slag, there were two tacks and one nail excavated in ABC/8.
Most notable in today's excavation was the occurence of three ivory fragments. Two are burned. All three are worked. Also found was a glass bead.
