20 boxes of tiles discarded from tile stratum: H-I 38-39
1 box of tiles discarded from topsoil stratum, J-M 31-33
2 boxes of tiles discarded from topsoil stratum, E-I 41-45
[Jenifer Neils]
Work continued in Trench 19, clearing Grids H-I 38-39 down through the tile stratum. The north-south profile of this area showed a roughly vertical division between hard yellow soil to the north and softer, black soil to the south. The workmen first cleared the area down to the tile stratum, where there was a very heavy concentration of tiles mixed with stones. Tiles included pan tiles and cover tiles, many marked with finger-incised letters; a few pieces of ridgepole tile; a nearly complete gorgon antefix with join pieces of the adjoining cover tile; and a nearly complete banquet frieze plaque, plus a corner fragment of another.
Other workmen cleared the woods north of T19 and began clearing the topsoil from the extension trench. The extension is 3 meters by 4 meters, covering grids J-M 31-33. The topsoil stratum produced a few pottery fragments and one box of tiles.
Another workman continued to clear the topsoil stratum E-I 41-45, producing two boxes of tiles and pottery fragments.
