Work continued cleaning down the tile concentration in aB/59-61. Small flecks of burned material including one large piece (see finds) were uncovered. Baulks at W/59-62, Y-Z/59 and M/77-82 continued to be cleaned down. From M/77-82 occasional bits of badly burned and damaged pottery were recovered. No real burn layer was visible and the great majority of tile and pottery shows no evidence of burning. At P-Q/74-78 work was continued excavating the soil disturbed by robbers. A small amount of tile and pottery were removed. There was a lot of plaster in evidence - most of it left 'in situ'. At W/59-62 very little tile, pottery or plaster was visible with some tile projecting. Work continued along a-W/59 with more projecting tile and plaster in evidence. A small amount of work was done in clearing the floor in R-T/74-75 to attempt to dry it out.

Work was begun in V-W/67-68 to uncover the three stacked pan-tiled that appeared to be badly damaged and disturbed by robbers. All tile that came directly from this area that was visible from the surface - i.e. damaged and lying directly in the surface - was

set aside to look for joins. All tile from surrounding meters that was not directly over this area had previously been collected and reserved. (see p.19 ). These three tiles had been consolidated with PVA at the end of last season so it is hoped that they can be restored.

A workman made picchetti and cleared a path to the east of T-26 to be used as a tile and soil dump. Trees to the north and south were also removed. Photographs were taken of progress.

Work continued in M-P/82 first by carefully cleaning out weeds and leaves then by cleaning down the baulk. Numerous tiles were exposed in this baulk including a large tile in N/82. There also appeared to be a high concentration of plaster. Work continued in R/65-67 with large amounts of projecting tile visible. Some of this tile was burnt. Also visible were pockets of plaster at the same level as the tiles, throughout the tiles and also above them. Throughout R/63-67 a line of tile and plaster was visible at approx. 75-95 cm below surface level. Some burn material was visible including burnt tile and pottery. It should be noted that the soil above and around this tile concentration was generally light-yellow in color (see MT book VIII p. 295 ). Work continued clearing the floor in R-T/74-75 and in clearing the tile in aB/59-61. Minimal bone and pottery fragments were recovered. A few vitrified slag pieces were found.

The tiles in V-W/67-68 continued to be uncovered. The damage seems to be considerably more extensive than first thought. The area to the west - i.e. the direction of the three well-preseved flanges - appeared to have been almost completey destroyed. All that appeared to remain was a small piece of flange of the lower tile. A root was visible across the flat part of the tile that was not previously

visible in the photographs. Therefore this must be the middle or lower tile. The floor level was reached to the north and east. The eastern side did not yet appear disturbed.

Picchetti were placed at one meter intervals around the trench excepting a/68-71 for lack of picchetti. The area used as a dump for whatever sand and fill had to be removed (T-V/80-82) was cleared and the sand placed several meters to the east of meter 82 to be reused at the close of the season.
